Russell Crowe Joins Henry Cavill in the Highlander Reboot

The highly anticipated Highlander reboot has just added Russell Crowe to its impressive cast.

Directed by Chad Stahelski, renowned for his work on the John Wick franchise, this new adaptation of the 1986 classic, which originally starred Christopher Lambert as Connor MacLeod, will feature Henry Cavill in the lead role.

While specific details about Crowe's character remain under wraps, he is set to play a "key role" in the film. Crowe, an Academy Award winner for his portrayal of Maximus in Ridley Scott’s Gladiator, has also received nominations for his performances in The Insider and A Beautiful Mind. Notably, he appeared alongside Cavill in Man of Steel, portraying Superman’s Kryptonian father, Jor-El.

Crowe's illustrious film career includes iconic films such as L.A. Confidential (1997), Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003), Cinderella Man (2005), American Gangster (2007), The Nice Guys (2016), Thor: Love and Thunder (2022), The Pope’s Exorcist (2023), and the upcoming Kraven the Hunter (2024).

As for the reboot, plot details remain scarce. Initially developed at Lionsgate, the project is now being produced by Amazon MGM Studios. Filming is expected to commence this fall, although an official release date has yet to be announced. However, Stahelski has hinted that the film may hit theaters in 2027 or 2028.

The original Highlander film follows Russell Nash (played by Lambert), who, after a fateful sword fight in a New York City parking lot, inadvertently leaves behind a fragment of an ancient weapon. This discovery leads brilliant forensics specialist Brenda Wyatt (Roxanne Hart) and her partner, Lt. Frank Moran (Alan North), into a perilous investigation that uncovers a centuries-old feud among powerful immortals.
